You Already Know. Now You Just Need To Decide
You are not stuck because you do not know what to do next.
I have to say this to you. Between my own experiences of repeating that I am "stuck" and the number of times I hear it from the people I am blessed to support, it adds up to hours every month. Let's take a moment to explore what is really true.
Not knowing what to do next is just that. It is a decision point. Once you choose what to do next, you now know what you are going to do. That is all.
Being stuck is different.
What we really mean is that we don't trust that what we know is enough to support our decision. That is different. That difference has kept you in a holding pattern- literally renegotiating decisions you've already really made within yourself. The outward expression has just felt like too much to own.
Let's talk truth. I'll go first.
I asked for a divorce in early 2020. I knew it was time far before I said those words. We had lots of conversations about what needed to shift for each of us in the years leading up to that point. A couple of years before I said the words aloud, I whispered them to myself. I prayed about how I felt. I finally answered a close friend's question about whether or not I was unhappy in my marriage. I'm sure my response was that I felt stuck. I wasn't stuck.
Using my rear-view mirror, I can see that I was pretty much decided. After a few poignant conversations, I began tracking the responses and noting whether or not there was the shift I asked for. I imagine that he may have done the same. At the end of the day, the years prior to our divorce were layered with complications, beautiful memories, and love. Is that really what we define as stuck?
You see it, right? I made a choice. I considered so many factors, especially related to my faith and religious beliefs. I considered our children and what life would be like for us to be co-parents who were no longer married. I knew what to do. I didn't trust that what I knew was enough. The truth is, what I knew then was the same as what I knew when I asked for a divorce. I was simply circling the decision for a long time, for much longer than I would like to admit.
Believe it or not, this is not about my divorce. It is about how we often circle decisions and minimize the impact of not trusting ourselves. You might think about the things you are waiting to decide. You might be saying, "Well, this choice is not as emotionally charged as a divorce, Anika. I'm only considering whether or not I should apply for the role I've always wanted."
We agreed to talk truth, yeah? If there was no emotion there, you would probably have decided already. Take another look at what is really there for you.

Need some proof? Think of the last three moments where you were deeply certain that you knew enough to make the decision, but you waited anyway. Did the external information show you something new or did it confirm what you already knew?
This is all about you discovering the truth for yourself. You do know, and perhaps you aren't sure why you haven't moved yet. I get it. Clearly I've been there. My divorce is just one example. What I've learned is priceless. I want you to have that for yourself, too.
