You Are Already Ready

There are these pinnacle moments where you get to really see it all. It’s as if the clouds parted, and for the first time in a while, you see the beauty of a clear blue night sky full of stars. You knew the stars and sky were there, even though you couldn’t see them through the cloud cover or dark sky. Perhaps it was location, weather, or some other occurrence that blocked your view. But man, when you can see it so clearly, it's like taking your first full inhalation after holding your breath for hours.

That is how I feel this month.

With all of the complexity of the beginning of this year, from grieving the transition of my Godmother, the changing nature of my business, and releasing the familiarity of who I used to be, it’s been a little dark.

Not dark in a scary way. More like your first night in an AirB&B. You know you are good, but you don’t quite know how to navigate in the dark. You’re not afraid, but the space is unfamiliar. That is what this moment has been like for me. I know I’ve taken the next step, but I’ve been looking for the familiar things and desiring my favorite blanket and chair. I’ve wanted to curl back up in my hiding places while at the same time the center of my being has been saying GO.

So I am going.

In retrospect, I can see that the way I have been moving since the beginning of this year is different. I am clear about what I am up to. I am not certain of the how, but I know that is not my business anyway. God is clearly responsible for how it plays out. I have been closing out open conversations, clearing the air in old relationships, letting go of my stale perspectives about what my business needs to be, and challenging myself to release the narratives I’ve been clenching in my hands. I see now that they expired a long time ago…I just wasn’t ready.

I think that was a surprise to me. I’ve been chasing after readiness, as if it were a title I could achieve or a state of being where every piece of the puzzle would be perfectly in place. Ready is actually a declaration that allows things to move into position. You declare that you are ready, so the rest can come into alignment.

In fact, it made me reflect on the hundreds of 1:1 career conversations, job screens, and interviews I completed during my years in corporate roles. There were some candidates who may have met 50% of the requirements for the role or the next level. They arrived with confidence in what they had and spent little time on what they did not. That was very different from my experience with most women, and particularly different with women of color. I’m sure you don’t need me to detail out why. In fact, in a program I helped build where we partnered with Harvard Business Review, we leveraged a ton of articles and data to help leaders understand the biases around readiness that exist.

Some people see readiness as a completion of the entire checklist, while others consider it a suggestion and trust that they will be able to improvise as needed.

That’s how I am in the kitchen. I’ve always got an idea about how to make something work if I don’t have the ingredient I want. And to tell the truth, if I can’t find something I need in the grocery store, I don’t wait there until they get their next shipment. Like, do I have to have the entire list? Why should my next level be subjected to so much personal scrutiny? That is fear.

And I know you are thinking the same thing. “Yeah, why do we do that?”

You might get some benefit out of exploring that question to help you see your patterns and explore the old narratives, but the better question for immediate impact is “How can I be ready now?”

Because when I looked at the sky, I was reminded that the stars were always there. They owned their position regardless of the conditions. I think stars know who they are and have no misconception about their role being to shine. They are illuminating the sky regardless of whether or not the cloud cover interrupts the visibility of the star gazing.

Readiness is a state of being. It’s important not confuse it with what is at the core- your true identity. In my journey of becoming, I’ve learned that in my clarity about who I am, I show up “ready” without a need for all of the pieces. I may still experience the dialogue about readiness happening in the background, but I ground myself in what I experience as my I am-ness.

My identity speaks truth and reminds me of God’s promises. I am ready now, without all of the answers. I don’t perform, I stand in my truth. I am making bold declarations and decisions, one after another. I’m taking action more quickly, trusting that I do know the way forward.

Identity revelation is freedom. Clarity. Peace. Alignment. Ease.

Once you remember who you are, all bets are off. When you ground yourself in your identity, you let go of the behaviors that minimize your impact. You move faster. You release second-guessing. You trust yourself more deeply. You stop over-explaining as if you need the approval from someone outside of yourself.

You embrace an experience you own, not one that is in constant response to those around you. Your identity has always been here, at your core. It’s time to embody who you already are. Yes, you see it. Already… All Ready. You are ready.
